The thunderstorms and rain clouds that passed over Luxembourg on Wednesday primarily impacted the country’s south.
In Esch-sur-Alzette, various places were impacted, and the fire department had to intervene in several streets and neighbourhoods, including the city centre, to pump out large amounts of water that had not been absorbed by the earth but had accumulated in the basements of buildings. Some sewers overflowed as a result of the heavy rains.
In Koerich, lightning struck the roof of a house on Wednesday morning and caused a fire, triggering a major intervention by the emergency services.

“In the event of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall is possible within a short period of time,” the national weather service Météolux warns.
Under cloudy skies, “rainfall and even thunderstorms may occur until the evening”, Météolux cautioned on Wednesday.
The Luxembourg Motoring Association (ACL) warns that the rainfall will cause aquaplaning and poor road conditions in some places. It advises motorists to be careful by driving slowly and adapting their driving to the weather conditions.

Some areas are particularly affected. The ACL cites the Rue de l’Eau in Esch, the Dieswee in Esch, the Deich roundabout in Esch, and the area after the Croix de Bettembourg on the A3 towards France.
