The cause of this extensive traffic jam on the A1 motorway was a construction site, located between the Gasperich intersection and the Sandweiler/Hamm exit, which lasted longer than expected. With traffic restricted to one lane and a speed limit of 70 km/h in place, the flow was thus severely disrupted even before the usual rush hour.
Motorists, the majority of whom were cross-border workers, travelling in the direction Luxembourg-Germany and heading towards Kirchberg had to be patient as early as 5.40am. Congestion quickly spread beyond the A1 and Gasperich intersection to the A3 and A6 motorways near the Cessange intersection.
According to the motorway observation agency CITA, construction work had been completed by 6.40am, after which both lanes reopened to traffic.
