Chamber of DeputiesState of the nation address delayed to the autumn

RTL Today
The Chamber of Deputies and the government were both in agreement in pushing the state of the nation address back to the autumn, rather than scheduling the speech for the spring as usual.

The broad consensus in delaying the prime minister's speech to the autumn of 2019 follows the justification that Xavier Bettel only presented the governmental declaration four months ago. The government did not form officially until December following the October elections due to coalition negotiations.

In the autumn of 2019, the prime minister will also present the following year's budget. The budget draft bill was submitted on 11 October in 2018.

On Wednesday, MPs will vote on modifying a Chamber regulation on holding the state of the nation address in the second semester of the year.

Formally, the conference of presidents in the Chamber - the heads of the different parties - invite the prime minister to address the Chamber of Deputies on the state of the nation. The tradition was first created by the liberal prime minister Gaston Thorn in 1974.
