The blue algae can produce toxins in high quantities that can be dangerous not only for aquatic life, but also for humans and animals. Effects on humans can vary widely - symptoms range from headaches to skin irritations and nausea.

After samples taken by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) showed that swimming in the dredging ponds can currently be potentially harmful to health, the water was closed to swimmers.

The water authority also says that no animals should be allowed to drink from the water and that general contact with the water should be avoided. Water sports and fishing are also advised against.

Anyone who has been swimming there in the last few days and is not feeling well should contact their doctor and tell him about the blu algae.

You can still swim at the Stauséi at the moment. However, a swimming ban could follow should more blue algae appear. In various areas of the Moselle, swimming is already being advised against.
