Earlier this week, we took a closer look at the violations committed by cyclists embroiled in traffic accidents in Luxembourg, but now it's time to look at the vehicles they share the road with.

Overtaking, unlawful crossing, cycling in the wrong direction: What are Luxembourg's most common traffic violations among cyclists? The first rather damning observation is that 58.1% of cases seeing motorists involved in accidents in Luxembourg follow a traffic offence, according to the 2018 average calculated by Statec. The five most common offences are speeding (13.8%), not following priority rules (11%), not giving way to pedestrians (10.1%), not observing the safety distance (9%), and overlapping safety lines (7.9%).

Other offences, namely driving in the wrong direction (0.1%), running red lights (0.9%), and overtaking violations (3%) were found to be relatively rare in connection with accident, according to Statec. The statistics service also outlined the difficulty in proving accidents linked to being on the phone whilst driving, which was categorised as 'other offences' representing only 1.1% of accidents in 2018.

The statistics sent by Statec to our colleagues at RTL 5Minutes do not include drink-driving or driving under the influence of narcotics. The Statec contact explained that globally, the traffic violations covered in the article are offences which could be the causes of accidents as noted by on-call police officers.

In total, Statec's figures detailed 826 traffic violations "presumed" to be linked to accidents in 2018.
