
There are around 50 travel operators in the Grand Duchy, employing almost 700 people. Companies in the sector are expecting to make a 70-80% loss this year due to coronavirus, with customers requiring refunds or vouchers.
As long as the state of emergency persists - currently planned to end in mid-June- travel agencies are not required to immediately reimburse clients, instead looking for solutions. The Ministry of Small and Medium-sized Businesses has opted to provide loans rather than putting together a support fund for the travel industry.
However, Minister Lex Delles said customers who have experienced cancelled holidays should be reimbursed in full.
Around 70% of staff in the sector have been furloughed or put on partial unemployment. The remainder have still been able to work, with businesses drawing upon their reserves.
Agencies who normally work on 10-12% commission have abandoned this altogether during the crisis.
