24 August marks not only six months since the beginning of the Russian invasion, but also the day that Ukraine annually commemorates its independence from the former Soviet Union.

Citizens of the war-torn country celebrated their Independence Day for a 31st time this year. On Saturday, Ukrainians who fled their home to find refuge in Luxembourg convened at the Hesperange municipal park to show support for each other and those who are still fighting the Russian invaders.

“This year, we feel as though someone is trying to steal our independence, our country, our language, and our culture”, explained Inna Yaremenko, vice president of non-profit organisation LUkraine.

Participants admitted that they were initially unsure about organising festivities for the occasion, but decided that it represents a great opportunity to bring Ukrainians living in Luxembourg closer together.

At the Independence Day festivities in Hesperange, organisers also set up stalls to sell Ukrainian goods and expose the works of local artists. All profits collected by LUkraine will later be donated to humanitarian aids.
