Taxi pricesULC demands revision of taxi regulatory legislation

RTL Today
The Luxembourg Consumer Association (ULC) has called for the government to revise its legislation on taxi regulations in light of price hikes.

The new law on taxi regulation came into effect on 1 September. According to Statec, taxi prices fell by 4.3% between March and July 2017, but then rose by 11.2% from July 2017 until December 2018.

On average, prices have risen by 6%, according to the ULC on Monday morning. The association stressed that this makes taxi rides in Luxembourg some of the most expensive in Europe.

In a press release issued on Monday the ULC cited the example of other countries, which show that liberalising prices makes taxi rides more expensive. The association called for the relevant minister to launch a new study on taxis in Luxembourg and use the results of the study to revise the recent law.

The taxi federation has not yet responded to the ULC's allegations, but confirmed that a meeting will take place with François Bausch, Minister for Transport, in three weeks.

Bausch also expressed reluctance at commenting on the topic and referred to the meeting on 5 February. The minister would then discuss the issues raised by the ULC with the taxi federation (FPLTA), which include licences, geographic zones, journeys to municipalities, and the evolution of prices.
