A lot of work goes into maintaining the CFL's trains, most of which happens during the night shift.

Mir geheien e Bléck hannert d'Kulissen vun der Nuetsschicht bei den CFL: wäschen, kontrolléieren, reparéieren.

Some of the routine work that goes on during the night shift includes washing the outside of trains and cleaning the train's inside (especially as people do tend to leave litter in trains!).

Night shift workers also test and double check the brakes are all in good condition and fix air conditioning units where required.

The CFL's central HQ could also be seen as the biggest cleaning facility in the country. Given that trains travel an average of 220 kilometres per day, they certainly do get dirty. Usually, trains are washed every two weeks, albeit if a train hits a bird or another animal, employees usually hand wash the train that night.

The CFL introduced night shifts four years ago and employees ensure that the train's wheels are working correctly, but also verify simple things, such as whether the doors open properly. If something breaks, this is where it gets fixed.

Maintaining trains during day shifts and weekends became too challenging as the CFL introduced more trains and the use of trains rose substantially. On average, 35 employees work the night shift.
