Youth for Climate Luxembourg, a group of young environment campaigners in the Grand Duchy, has issued a plea to the government to recognise their inaction against the climate crisis.
The group, which has previously staged a series of peaceful protests in Luxembourg City, has lent their voices to a case filed by six Portuguese activists last November, holding 33 countries to account for failing to comply with environmental obligations.
In an open letter addressed to premier Xavier Bettel, the group implored the government to act as swiftly as they did when faced with the Covid crisis, and demanded they admit their guilt before the European Court of Human Rights.
Youth for Climate Luxembourg demands the Luxembourgish government to plead guilty.
In November 2020, six young Portuguese filed a case against 33 countries for taking insufficient measures against the climate crisis and thus violating fundamental human rights.
The applicants are claiming that the defendant governments, including Luxembourg, have failed to comply with their positive obligations to protect the right to life (Article 2), the right to private and family life (Article 8), and the right to non-discrimination (Article 14) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
In March 2021, in order to support the young Portuguese claimants, Youth for Climate Luxembourg (YFCL) decided to write a letter to the Luxembourgish government and reached out to Greenpeace Luxembourg for their support. The letter was sent to the Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, the entire government, the parliamentary parties and the members of the parliament on the 26th-27th April.
The letter calls on the government to plead guilty to the aforementioned lawsuit. The Luxembourg government has until the 27th May to send their response to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR); in which they need to take responsibility for insufficient climate action and thereby infringing on our fundamental rights.
This should be the first step in the process to a truly carbon neutral future and a livable future for our generation. We cannot learn from our mistakes if we don’t accept them! We are waiting to see only one response from the Luxembourgish government - their guilt on the 27th May at the ECtHR!
