A total of 54 mayors swapped their municipal duties for waiting tables at Luxembourg City's Schueberfouer, serving food and drinks for charity as part of the fair's longstanding Mayors' Day tradition. The event brought municipal leaders into the fairground's food and drink establishments, where they donned aprons and put their serving skills to the test.
Finding the right customer proved an early challenge for one participant, who was left holding a plate after reaching an empty table.
"I found the table, but nobody’s sitting there", laughed Niederanven Mayor Fred Ternes. "Now I'm standing here with a fillet and have to find a table where someone wants to eat it."
Economy Minister Lex Delles was among the patrons enjoying the evening, joking that experience had taught him to dress for potential mishaps. "Things have gone wrong sometimes, that's true, so I haven't put on freshly washed trousers", he said.
Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer, meanwhile, drew on years of experience as she posed for photographs and served diners. For her, the occasion also carried a personal significance, as she reflected on the absence of the late Colette Flesch, first woman mayor of Luxembourg's capital.
"For many, many years, it was a tradition for me to come here with Colette Flesch and all the friends sitting at the table behind us", Polfer said. "We know how much Colette loved the Schueberfouer, and we simply want to carry on that tradition."
