
EU FOREIGN MINISTERS MEETING – EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg this morning. They will formally kick off negotiations with Ukraine, and neighbouring Moldova, on aligning with a first "cluster" of EU laws.
LUXEMBOURG PARLIAMENT – The Chamber of Deputies has a full agenda today: alongside the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Institutions Committee will convene to discuss the current state of implementation of the Waringo Report at the Palace, and how the newly established Maison du Grand-Duc has developed organisationally. Deputies will also debate a reform of the electoral law.
HEAT WAVE – Luxembourg is heading for its hottest week of the year, with temperatures set to climb to around 30°C by Wednesday and potentially hitting 33°C on Friday. Nights will also turn significantly warmer from mid-week, with overnight lows staying above 19°C. The hot spell is part of a broader heatwave building across France, where highs of up to 38°C are forecast by Thursday.
IRAN WAR – The United States and Iran have announced an end to their war, with a signing ceremony due in Geneva this Friday. President Trump has confirmed a comprehensive deal and lifted the naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz. Oil markets reacted sharply, Brent crude falling 4% to $84 a barrel, while Tokyo's Nikkei surged 4.6% within half an hour of opening. Details remain limited, although Iran's nuclear programme was a central sticking point. Trump confirmed Tehran will never possess a nuclear weapon. He has also warned Israel not to jeopardise the deal, as heavy bombardment of Hezbollah in Lebanon continues.
UKRAINE WAR – Russia has launched a major missile barrage across Ukraine, killing at least nine people and setting Kyiv's historic cathedral on fire. Five rescue workers were among those killed in strikes on Kharkiv. Poland activated fighter jets in response, calling the move precautionary. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes south of Moscow killed three people.
SWISS REFERENDUM – Swiss voters have rejected a cap on the country's population, with 55% voting against a divisive anti-immigration proposal to limit Switzerland's population to 10 million and curb migration.
G7 SUMMIT – Leaders of the world's seven largest industrialised nations gather today in Évian in the French Alps for a three-day G7 Summit. The agenda includes the situation in the Middle East, the global economic outlook, and developments in artificial intelligence. Anti-G7 protests were held yesterday in nearby Geneva.
FOOTBALL – In the World Cup, Germany thrashed Curaçao 7-1, Australia beat Turkey 2-0, and Sweden won over Tunisia 1-0. Brazil and Morocco drew 1-1, the Netherlands and Japan finished 2-2, and Côte d'Ivoire beat Ecuador 1-0. Haiti lost 1-0 to Scotland. Tonight, Belgium face Egypt at 9pm, while Spain take on Cape Verde at 6pm.
FORMULA 1 – Lewis Hamilton has claimed his first victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona Grand Prix , ending championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s five-race winning streak. The 41-year-old finished ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris in an all-British podium.
BASKETBALL – 63 people were arrested in New York at the weekend as celebrations of the Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years turned violent. One person was shot, four were stabbed, and 10 police officers were injured. Crowds set fire to school buses and damaged police vehicles. A victory parade is planned for Thursday.
