WEATHER WARNING – The national weather service, Meteolux, has again issued a heat warning for today, but only for the southern half of the country until midnight. Temperatures will climb above 30°C in some places. People with health conditions are advised to stay in the shade and avoid physical exertion.

MOSELLE DEATH – A man has died in hospital after jumping from a bridge into the Moselle River in Grevenmacher on Monday. Despite being resuscitated at the scene by divers and paramedics, police confirmed he passed away overnight. Authorities currently believe the incident was accidental, with no evidence of third-party involvement.

NURSING REFORM BILL – Luxembourg's two main trade unions, the OGBL and LCGB, have rejected a government bill aimed at boosting the nursing profession. The unions say the draft legislation fails to offer real legal protection or career prospects for nurses, and amounts to little more than a repackaging of existing rules.

WW2 BOOK – A new book sheds light on one of the darker chapters of Luxembourg's wartime history. According to the hobby historian Georges Even, more than 100 Luxembourg nationals were members of the Waffen-SS during the Second World War. Even stresses that not all should be labelled as Nazis, but around a dozen, he says, were true believers in the ideology, including men who served as concentration camp guards.

EUROPE HEATWAVE – Europe is sweltering through a record-breaking May heatwave, with temperatures topping 35°C in London and forecast to reach 39 °C in parts of France. The scorching heat, driven by a dome of warm air from North Africa, has already been linked to at least seven deaths in France and four teen drownings in England. Authorities are urging caution as the heatwave is expected to last through the week.

UKRAINE WAR Russia has threatened new attacks on Kyiv, urging foreign embassies and international organisations to evacuate staff. The move has been widely condemned. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres summoned the Russian ambassador, warning that UN personnel would not be leaving.

IRAN WAR – Tehran is accusing the United States of a grave ceasefire violation following fresh American strikes on Iranian targets, warning the actions will not go unanswered. Israel has also struck Lebanon again, killing 31 people, the deadliest attack since a ceasefire came into effect there in April.

HAJJ PILGRIMAGE – More than 1.7 million Muslims have joined the hajj pilgrimage in Mecca this year, braving temperatures of up to 44°C . Despite the ongoing Middle East war, Saudi officials say more pilgrims travelled from abroad this year than in 2025.

SAMSUNG PAY DEAL – Samsung has reached a pay deal with unions representing its semiconductor workers, ending a dispute that had threatened strike action. Employees will receive a pay rise of 6.2% and a share of company profits amounting to a bonus worth around €340,000 per person.
