MISSING BOY FOUND – A large-scale search operation was launched at the Echternach lake yesterday afternoon after a nine-year-old boy was reported missing. Police patrols, a helicopter, the Red Cross dog unit, and CGDIS rescue divers were all deployed. At 9.49pm last night, police confirmed the boy had been found safe and sound.
HEAT ALERT – Luxembourg is under a yellow heat alert until Tuesday morning, with temperatures reaching 36 degrees today. Forest fire risk remains lower than southern Europe thanks to our mixed woodland, but rescue services, the CGDIS say they are ready, with vehicles carrying up to ten thousand litres of water into the forest, and a reminder for landowners to maintain their land.
Luxembourgish firefighters remain in the Bordeaux region, supporting French colleagues as they stabilise wildfires that have burned over 42,000 hectares. Although authorities declared the fires were contained over the weekend, monitoring continues, as windy conditions could spark flare-ups. Luxembourg sent a firefighting aircraft and 15 firefighters to the Gironde last Wednesday.
GERMANY SPEEDING – In neighbouring Germany, the so-called "Speed Week" begins today. A speed-camera crackdown running until Sunday, targeting speeding, especially within built-up areas. Not all German states are taking part – Saarland is not, but Rhineland-Palatinate is. Locations will not be announced in advance, and motorway sections with speed limits will also be checked.
CEUTA MIGRANT CRISIS – EU ambassadors meet in Brussels today to discuss the fallout from the migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, following a surge of tens of thousands of migrants, and how to better coordinate securing the bloc's external borders. EU interior ministers will meet tomorrow. Morocco's interior ministry has responded publicly for the first time, blaming disinformation on social media and human traffickers, while rejecting accusations that it deliberately encouraged the influx.
GREECE FIRES – With forest fires still raging in parts of Europe, two firefighting helicopter pilots – a Dane and a Greek – were killed when their aircraft collided midair while battling a wildfire west of Athens. It's the deadliest incident yet in a week of Greek fires that has now claimed five lives.
IRAN WAR – Iran says it's nearing a deal with Oman over a new Strait of Hormuz shipping route, after the US called off planned strikes to allow for diplomacy. President Trump said on Saturday the "perimeters" of a deal were in place. The US and Iran have been at war since February, with talks now set to resume today.
CYCLING – Lorena Wiebes sprinted to victory on the second stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Sunday after a hilly 147.9km run from Aigle to Geneva in Switzerland. The peloton will roll into France for today’s third stage which takes in a steep 11km climb just outside Geneva but ends with a flat 15km stretch to the finish line at Poligny with temperatures of 35°C forecast.
FOOTBALL – FIFA has shelved a leaked $4.2 billion private investment plan after a furious backlash, with a former IOC marketing chief now saying president Gianni Infantino's leadership is "over". UEFA says it has lost confidence in him, while CONCACAF has called for "a reckoning" with his presidency.
Results from matchday one of the new national football season: Mondercange beat defending champions Differdange 2-1. Racing Union top the table after a 5-1 win over Käerjeng. Walferdange also picked up 3 points in their first match back in the National Division, winning 3-2 against Hostert. Rumelange beat Hesper 1-0. Wiltz and Etzella had already drawn 1-1 on Saturday, while Niederkorn beat Jeunesse 2-1. Two more fixtures tomorrow evening: Bissen v Dudelange, and Strassen v Rosport.
