Luxembourg

FIREBALL IN THE SKY – A large fireball was spotted moving across the sky over Luxembourg on Sunday evening, breaking apart with a series of loud bangs. Experts have been speculating as to the nature of the object travelling at up to 60–70,000 km/h. Fragments are reported to have caused roof damage in several parts of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

RAIL STRIKE – Cross-border rail services between Luxembourg and Belgium are set to face major disruptions until late Wednesday due to strike action. The industrial action in Belgium will impact multiple cross-border connections during this period, with passengers advised to check the traffic status before starting their journey on CFL’s website or via its mobile app.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY – Around 5,000 people marched through Luxembourg City yesterday for International Women’s Day, with healthcare and gender inequality as the central themes.

REPATRIATION FLIGHTS – A fourth repatriation flight landed at Findel airport on Friday night, bringing the total number repatriated to 500. Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel has urged anyone still in the region to leave as soon as possible, and to be prepared to travel to safer airports, such as Muscat in Oman, to reach evacuation flights.

World

MIDDLE EAST WAR – Iran has fired missiles at Israel following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader, succeeding his father. Israel says it has responded with strikes on what it calls regime infrastructure in central Iran today, and has also targeted Hezbollah sites in Beirut. An Iranian drone attack on the island of Sitra in Bahrain has left 32 civilians wounded, four of them seriously, including children. Oil prices have surged past $100 a barrel for the first time in nearly four years, and Asian stock markets fell sharply this morning. You can find all the latest news on our live ticker here.

GERMANY STATE ELECTIONS – The Greens have narrowly won state elections in Baden-Württemberg, taking around 30% of the vote. The CDU came in just under 30%, the AfD on nearly 19%. Both the SPD and FDP failed to clear the 5% threshold. Green candidate Cem Özdemir has already proposed continuing the coalition with the CDU.

RIHANNA MANSION SHOOTINGRihanna’s Los Angeles home has been hit by gunfire, with a woman firing around 10 shots at the Beverly Hills mansion while the singer was reportedly inside. A suspect was arrested shortly after. No injuries have been reported.

FORMULA 1 – George Russell has won a dramatic Australian Grand Prix for Mercedes, ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. World champion Lando Norris finished fifth, while Max Verstappen recovered from 20th on the grid to finish sixth. Home favourite Oscar Piastri failed to start after crashing on his way to the grid.

RUGBY Scotland have stunned Six Nations favourites France, winning 50-22 at Murrayfield in a remarkable result that keeps them in title contention. Scotland scored 7 tries, leading 47-14 with 15 minutes to go, before France scored 4 late tries to claim a bonus point. That bonus point proves crucial, France remain top of the table on points difference, with the title still theirs to lose going into the final round.

FOOTBALL – Differdange and Strassen have extended their lead at the top of the Luxembourg championship on Matchday 20. Champions Differdange beat Hesperange 3-2, while Strassen won 2-0 against Niederkorn. Racing beat Mondorf 3-1 and Roeser beat Bissen 1-0.

In the German Bundesliga, St Pauli and Frankfurt drew 0-0, while Bremen beat Union Berlin 4-1. In France, Lens beat Metz 3-0 and close to within 1 point of leaders PSG.

Weather

The week kicks off with a bright and sunny Monday morning, followed by increasing cloud cover as the day goes on. A few light showers may pop up, but the evening is expected to stay dry. Temperatures start around 2°C in the morning and rise to a pleasant 18°C in the afternoon, with winds remaining light at up to 10km/h.
