The US-led Board of Peace announced that Hamas has agreed to fully disarm in exchange for an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. President Trump revealed the deal on Truth Social, calling it a "monumental step" towards peace, with Turkey, Egypt and Qatar having mediated the agreement. However, Israel has yet to comment, and an Israeli political source said beforehand that the proposal did not "satisfactorily" address Israel's demand for full demilitarisation of Gaza, adding that the issue wasn't even raised during this week's Trump-Netanyahu meeting in Washington. Hamas negotiator Ghazi Hamad said the group was making "concessions... to save them from killing and displacement," while stressing Israel must also comply with the deal's terms.
The Board of Peace, chaired by Trump, said its focus now turns to implementation, with mediators Egypt, the US, Qatar and Turkey expected to meet in Cairo shortly to agree on a timetable. Analysts caution significant hurdles remain, including that the Palestinian committee meant to govern Gaza has yet to be allowed into the territory, and Israeli forces still control more territory than they did when the ceasefire began in October.
