The Red Lions travelled to Lithuania on Thursday for their UEFA Euro qualifiers, which starts at 8.45pm on Friday.
Twenty minutes after the charter airline Carpatair flight departed, the cabin was filled with smoke and the smell of burning plastic. The Luxembourgish Football Federation team were accompanied by the press on the flight, and all were a bit on edge, to say the least.
The stewardesses and a technician acted swifty and immediately brandished a fire extinguisher. The pilot was able to recognise the cause of the smoke, as the plane’s ventilation had overheated.
The plane then continued to fly at a lower altitude, in the so-called safety area, in the event of an emergency landing. All in all, a bit of unnecessary stress for the team the day before an important match.
