After a series of three straight increases, Luxembourg motorists will see the cost of diesel fuel fall from Saturday, 19 September. The price at the pump for diesel – the country’s most popular fuel – will drop to €2.114 per litre, making it 4.6 cents cheaper than the rate set on Thursday. This means filling a 50-litre tank will now cost €105.70 compared to €108 previously, saving drivers €2.30 per full tank.

This latest price decrease comes just two days after diesel reached its highest point since April, peaking at €2.160 per litre on Thursday – only two cents below the all-time record of €2.18.

Other diesel products also down

The downward trend has also been observed in other diesel categories. Heating oil now costs €1.595 per litre, down from €1.642, while diesel for industrial and commercial use has dropped to €1.719 per litre, a reduction of 4.6 cents. Diesel intended for agricultural and horticultural use is now priced at €1.566 per litre, also down by 4.6 cents.

Petrol prices stable

After a decrease on Friday, petrol prices have remained steady. However, as is often the case with fuel prices, what is true one day may change the next.

The price of SP95 petrol remains at €1.849 per litre, while SP98 holds at €2.075.

Diesel still expensive compared to start of year

After weeks of sharp fluctuations, this reduction offers a brief respite for motorists using diesel. Nonetheless, diesel remains particularly expensive compared to earlier this year: it is still 74 cents higher than at the start of the year, when it was sold at €1.375 per litre.

For a 50-litre tank, this amounts to an extra €36.95 per fill compared to the beginning of the year.

It remains to be seen whether this latest decrease signals a genuine reversal in trend or is simply a brief pause after the sharp increases of recent weeks.
