The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Statec) announced on Thursday morning that employment rose by 1.6% in 2020. Following a strong recovery in the third quarter, the tendency slightly declined to 0.6% in the final quarter of the year.
During both final quarters, more cross-border workers than residents contributed to the increase. The number of Luxembourgish employees actually declined by 0.1% from the third quarter to the fourth.
The fact that employment in the Grand Duchy rose in spite of the coronavirus crisis is mostly related to public service (+5%) and the construction sector (+3.5%).
The sectors that experienced a decline in 2020 were the industrial sector and small businesses working in commerce, transportation, and the hospitality sector.
