The fire started in a flat on the top floor around 6pm, and quickly spread to the roof of the building.

Residents of the flats were able to evacuate safely, while over 100 fire fighters fought to extinguish the flames. The operation lasted over six hours.

Rumelange town centre was temporarily closed to traffic to allow the emergency services to access the site.

One fire fighter suffered minor injuries in the process, while many apartments have been left uninhabitable due to the damage.
