In 2021, 24 people were killed on Luxembourg’s roads and over 260 people were seriously injured in road accidents. These figures are from the annual report on the year 2021 that was presented by Minister for Mobility François Bausch on Wednesday morning.
The most frequent causes of accidents with fatalities or serious injuries are still speeding and inebriated drivers. A large majority of accidents that resulted in fatalities or serious injuries also involved pedestrians that were hit or run over. Since 2013, the number of fatal accidents has decreased by 49%, Bausch said.
While speeding remains the main cause of fatal accidents, it is on the decline, thanks to the increasing number of speed cameras, according to the Minister. In this context, Bausch also announced that speed cameras will be installed in all tunnels on the A7 motorway, dubbed Nordstreck (“northern route”) in Luxembourgish.
