Around 12.30pm, a lorry crashed and fell on its side on the A64 motorway between Trier and the ‘Sauertal’ bridge, direction Luxembourg.

Authorities were left with no choice but to close the road and clear the vehicle, a process that lasted several hours.

According to a spokesperson for the motorway police, the driver of the lorry had to be hospitalised after the accident. However, she did not suffer severe injuries.

The cause of the accident remains to be determined.

According to reports from German media, the motorway in the direction of Luxembourg remained closed until 9.30pm on Wednesday. The other direction had to be partially shut as well, but motorists were able to continue using one of the lanes, which also slowed down traffic.

German authorities confirmed that the A64 was completely reopened in both directions on Thursday morning.
