On Saturday afternoon, the independent trade union OGBL invited people to Pétange, where OGBL president André Roeltgen held a 1 May speech with clear messages to politicians and citizens alike: topics ranged from the European Elections, to climate politics, and digitisation.
In just under a month the European Elections are upon us. Nationalist parties and tendencies in many European countries are a consequence of social inequalities. The gap between the poor and the rich is getting larger and right-wing parties are gaining ground. Partly to blame for this trend are the antisocial policies of the last years. The President of OGBL encouraged people to vote for parties who encourage social progress and take a stand against nationalism. People are not supposed to be divided.
Another important topic in André Roeltgen's speech was climate change. He approves of the youth movements which are trying to protect our planet.
OGBL's celebration for 1 May at Neumünster Abbey has been moved to 9 May, as a result of the national state mourning and the funeral for Grand Duke Jean.

Nora Back, the current General Secretary of OGBL, is supposed to succeed André Roeltgen in the role of President in December. A woman as the head of Luxembourg's largest trade union will be a historical first.
