At around 10pm, a plainclothes policeman discovered a wrecked car in the middle of the ‘Itzigerstee’ in Itzig.
When he saw that the driver was still inside and that he was injured, the officer tried to help him. However, he quickly came to regret his action as the injured driver verbally abused him.
The policeman then returned to his vehicle with the intention of alerting the emergency services so that they could help the motorist.
As he called the police, the good Samaritan briefly turned his back on the man, who then tried to run him over with his crashed vehicle.
The plainclothes policeman was hit in the legs and the motorist ended up stopping on the nearby cycle path. He was picked up by the police a few minutes later.
“Visibly disorientated”, the man was immobilised and initially placed under medical observation. His car was seized on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office.
The injured officer was taken to hospital.
