In a recent Politmonitor survey, 18% of the population expressed concern about digital developments. The new survey seeks to clarify matters.

The survey, which was the first to analyse the perception of the public, confirmed that for the majority, digitisation represents the future and should be of utmost importance for Luxembourg. In particular, it showed the government is ready, with services such as Guichet or MyGuichet.lu obtaining satisfaction levels of 94%.

Marc Hansen, Minister Delegate for Digitalisation, said the public appreciate the ability to carry out administrative procedures digitally, but there were still those who preferred more old-fashioned methods, so both needed to be combined to ensure digitisation was on the right track.

Generally, the public wish to digitise more administrative procedures, such as the reimbursement of medical expenses, tax declarations, as well as housing and mobility aids. The department is working on these improvements at present.

For nearly 90% of the workforce, digitisation has an impact on their work- a positive impact for three quarters of respondents. But not everyone shares the same view.

Tommy Klein of TNS-Ilres said some people were concerned about job security and creation in the wake of digitisation, but that human contact and the potential decrease thereof was also an issue. Although digitisation facilitates collaboration and communication, it can come at the cost of direct personal relationships.

Real-time information, such as traffic information, certainly helps to make life easier, as well as the ability to order tickets for travel online. For many users today, the notion of dispensing with the Lux-Trust tokens and online banking would be unthinkable.

But not everyone is ready for all facets of digitisation. A large part of the population remains sceptical about services such as cloud storage, mobile phone payments and remotely controlled household appliances via smartphones. Targeted ads are also viewed with a level of distrust.
