Minister for Energy and Green MP Claude Turmes explained in an interview with 100,7 on Monday morning that the trade agreement between the EU and Canada has undergone many changes since its first draft.
As an MEP he had previously opposed the agreement, mainly due to the arbitrators suggested by CETA. With pressure from civil society, and the region of Walloon in particular, the agreement was amended and the European Court of Justice would now clearly set limits to CETA.
On Friday, Green MP Stephanie Empain said in an interview with Paperjam that "people didn't understand the verdict of the Green Party with regards to CETA."
The fact that CETA was voted in favour of last week drew criticism that MPs simply wanted to "check the boxes" during the state of emergency. Turmes understands where this criticism is coming from. Yet this matter will not spark a coup from coalition partners DP and LSAP against the Greens, assured the minister.
