The focus of the meeting between António Costa and Luc Frieden was on the development of the market and capital union to attract private investment in the EU economy. Both politicians agreed Luxembourg could play a vital role with its financial centre.

Another important topic is and remains the EU budget: EU countries are divided between those who want to save more and those who demand more funds. Luxembourg is in the middle here, as Prime Minister Frieden explained: Investment is needed, but not with new debts or taxes.

Geopolitical news was also on the agenda, as both politicians agreed that supporting Ukraine would be considered an investment in European security.

Costa sharply condemned the incident at Leipzig airport:

"Russia must understand that these threats, these hybrid or non-hybrid attacks, will not change the European Union's position. Because the European Union's position is rooted in the fundamental values ​​of international law."
