Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited the Luxembourgish embassy in Tokyo in order to pay their respects to the late Grand Duke Jean.

The imperial couple arrived in the Chiyoda neighbourhood of Tokyo at 11am local time on Thursday.

The imperial family and Luxembourgish Court have had a long-time and special friendship. At Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, then Prince Jean met Emperor Akihito. As Grand Duke, Jean also visited the Yamanashi prefecture during a state visit.

The imperial couple expressed a wish to visit the embassy in order to pay their respects to the late Grand Duke. At the embassy, the couple laid white chrysanthemums in front of the photograph of Grand Duke Jean and bowed, saying goodbye to a longtime friend.

Akihito will remain the emperor of Japan until 30 April, having announced his abdication due to his declining health. Naruhito, the current crown prince, will succeed his father.
