The flight was diverted to Birmingham airport following the appearance of smoke in the cabin. Some passengers told CoventryLive that they saw a bright flash before the cabin of the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 plane was filled with smoke.

The plane left Manchester Airport at 2.25 pm and circled over Lichfield and Wolverhampton before finally landing at Birmingham airport just before 3 pm.

Later, the airline issued a statement confirming that the captain of the flight "took the recommended action following a technical fault with one of the aircraft engines en-route between Manchester to Luxembourg which necessitated it being shut down."

The statement continued: "The flight was diverted to Birmingham Airport  where the aircraft landed safely without further incident. The Bombardier Q400 aircraft is designed to continue flying safely on only one of its engines and, as is standard industry procedure in such a situation, the aircraft was met by the airport’s emergency service vehicles.

All 40 passengers disembarked as normal when the aircraft arrived on stand and are being re-accommodated on an alternate aircraft to complete their travel to Luxembourg. The safety of its passengers and crew is the airline’s number one priority and Flybe apologises for the inconvenience experienced."

Passengers eventually arrived in Luxembourg and took to Twitter to praise the pilot and cabin crew's calm response.
