On Sunday evening, a 2-tonne, 2.5-metre tall ice sculpture collapsed at the Knuedler, with a block of ice hitting a 2-year-old boy, who succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event led to the closure and cancellation of Christmas markets and events around the City throughout Monday out of respect for the victim and family.

Luxembourg City (VdL) and Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) held a joint press conference on Monday evening, during which safety concerns were addressed. Lydie Polfer, mayor of Luxembourg City, and Marc Angel, head of LCTO, expressed their deep regrets at what had unfolded, and highlighted that they would work together with the public prosecutor's office in their investigation into what exactly had caused the incident.

Tuesday will see the market and associated events reopened to the public, while investigations are still underway. The public prosecutor's office have called for witnesses to contact 113 - and appeal for any information relating to the incident, including any photographs and videos taken at the scene around the time of the accident.
