After several days of deployment in France's Gironde, the 15 Luxembourg firefighters sent to support their French counterparts came back to Luxembourg on Wednesday. In an area heavily hit by major forest fires, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) crews' mission involved in particular tackling any flare-ups, putting out smouldering embers and remaining hotspots, and running reconnaissance patrols, especially in the evenings, in order to reduce the risk of the fire reigniting overnight, the CGDIS said in a statement on Wednesday.
The mission was carried out in close cooperation with the French emergency services, the statement added.
Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden thanked the CGDIS crews, as well as the teams manning the water bomber aircraft operated by Aquarius Aerial Firefighting, for their efforts in France.
