Luxembourgish residents throw themselves into work, making up some of Europe's employees spending most of their time at the work place. Most even tend to go over the stipulated 40 hours a week dictated in their contract.

As Statec write in their October 2019 report on work and social cohesion, the average number of hours worked by a full-time employee has dropped slightly throughout the last several years in Luxembourg, as in the majority of European countries. In 2010, Luxembourgish residents worked an average of 41.4 hours a week. Nine years later, they have become ever so slightly more relaxed, dropping to 40.6 hours a week by 2019, or 40 hours and 36 minutes.

This is nevertheless more than the European average of weekly hours, but shows a growing trend towards respecting the upper limit of 40 hours a week. The European average, on the other hand, is very close to the legal working limit in Luxembourg at 40.2 hours a week.

However, a small fraction of Luxembourgish employees have not managed to cut their working hours down. 4.1% of employees residing in Luxembourg spend many hours at work, often surpassing 49 hours a week, otherwise seen as an additional day of work each week. Whilst this share of employees work very long weeks, the amount of residents doing so remains under the European average of 9.2%.

Given that well-being at work is an increasing important aspect in job searches, Luxembourg's businesses certainly have enough reasons to ensure their employees adhere to legal working hours limits.
