The lack of financial means has recently forced the organisation to make four of its employees redundant, which means the daily rate of providing legal advice to five to ten refugees can no longer be guaranteed.

In its early days, non-profit organisation Passerell used to be funded by the ‘Oeuvre Nationale Grande-Duchesse Charlotte’. In the following years, employees attempted to finance their operations by publishing a book and collecting donations.

Nevertheless, financial means have started to run out over time, explains project coordinator Ambre Schulz: “We also received money from private donors and businesses, but we simply lack support from the respective ministries. We do receive help, but it is not enough to maintain our activities. We do not demand to be fully financed, just enough to ensure our long-term survival.”

Schulz explained that the organisation is not able to continue paying its employees. Aside from their fixed network of volunteers, Passerell relied on lawyers and social workers. “There will be a drastic decrease in activities”, concluded the project coordinator.

The organisation hopes that they can still find the financial means to keep up their work, but this process may require more time than they have left.
