2017 saw the mainstream introduction of multilingualism in the Luxembourg's nurseries. From then onward, children in care structures and schools do not only learn Luxembourgish, but also come into contact with French from an earlier age, while the use of their native languages is also promoted. With the support of Fonds National de la Recherche and the Ministry of Education, the University of Luxembourg has been working on the MuLiPEC Project.
The name of the MuLiPEC Project stands for the development of Multilingual Pedagogies in Early Childhood, which are supposed to help educators to build on children's skills in the domain of multilingualism. It all started with 46 people who participated in a 15 hour training course.
Seven of the participants were then followed over the course of a year and regularly talked about their practise.
The project also involved the creation of a number of videos and a magazine which can be found online at mulipec.uni.lu
These materials can be used during formal training, but can also help to inspire teachers, educators and parents.
Over the course of the coming years, the pedagogy should see greater expansion and become more inclusive. The next project of the linguistics researchers at the University of Luxembourg will build on collaboration with the parents.
