Is it all one big metaphor? Seeing Luxembourg’s Prime Minister repair a French flag with his shoe during a ceremony celebrating a cross-border project is indeed quite a sight.
The scene was captured on video by Minister for the Greater Region Corinne Cahen, who explained: “The French flag kept falling off the flagpole, and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg wanted to fix it before starting his speech. In the Greater Region, we can always count on each other. That is what makes us strong, united, and bound by a deep friendship!”
This peculiar scene took place on Tuesday in Thionville, where Bettel was invited to the official inauguration of the new P+R in Metzange, as well as the official inauguration of the Passerelle de l’Europe near the railway station. Both projects aim at improving the daily life of cross-border workers.
When he noticed that a French flag had fallen off its pole, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister decided to repair it, not hesitating to repurpose his shoe as a hammer. After several attempts, and to the laughter of the assembly, the flag was finally placed back on the pole.
