The enquiry was concerned with Luxembourg’s drinking water reserves. In light of the dry winter, the DP MPs wanted to know if the reserves will suffice to cover the summer months.
In her response, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development Joëlle Welfring ensured that despite a lack of precipitation, the water reserves “are not affected by the exceptionally dry conditions”.
The Upper Sûre Lake, for instance, “is more or less stable at 319 metres and starting to slowly go down”. The lake’s mid-June level “corresponds more or less to the long-term average of this month”. The weather conditions of the now following weeks will determine in which way the situation further develops.
Minister Welfring also confirmed that the groundwater and Upper Sûre Lake levels “are sufficient to support the population during the summer months”, even in the case of “elevated consumption”. According to the Greens politician, elevated levels are reached “when temperatures remain above 30°C for several consecutive days”.
Although reserves for the summer are considered to be sufficient, an awareness campaign against water wasting was launched on 16 June.
