The Robert Schuman building was constructed in the early 1970s and initially functioned as the seat of the European Parliament. After the Parliament relocated to the nearby Konrad Adenauer building, the premises became vacant for years, eventually leading to calls for the demolition of the building.
However, after through investigation, it has now been decided that the Schuman building can still be saved, and plans for refurbishing it are already underway. This means that the historic first assembly hall of the European Parliament, which the building houses, will not be lost.
In the future, the Schuman building is now destined to become a new home for cultural purposes. The nearby Philharmonie and Mudam Museum can potentially use it to organise workshops and thereby expand the already existing arts campus in Kirchberg.
