Inflation is undoubtably on many people’s minds at the moment. Luxembourg City’s faction of The Left called on residents of Bonnevoie to come together in solidarity.
Although MP Nathalie Oberweis noted that the name for the party - “party against expensive life” - was randomly chosen, she thinks that people’s struggles are becoming ever more evident: “Many people, politicians in particular, fail to see the problems people are facing.”
According to STATEC, over 17% of residents in Luxembourg are affected by poverty.
The event was also organised to help strengthen the local community and answer people’s questions. Pascale Zaourou, who recently penned a guide on how to get through these difficult times, was also present and organised a workshop for attendees.
Although expensive living conditions are a new issue for some people, it is also clear that many others had been struggling for a long time already, organisers say.
In terms of concrete policies, The Left is in favour of maintaining the index system. “Limitations on prices should be scaled rather than equally distributed”, said spokesman Guy Foetz. After all, many people have enough money to pay higher taxes, he further added.
At Sunday’s event, The Left managed to take away at least one aspect of people’s concerns by covering parts of the food costs.
