InterviewThe number of package deliveries has exploded, says Raymond Juchem

RTL Today
On Thursday morning, the president of the mail service union was a guest on RTL Radio, where he underlined the degree to which package deliveries "exploded" over the course of last year, with a staggering increase from four to six million annually.

Since the tendency is not very likely to change in the foreseeable future, it is of upmost importance that the supply chain is reinforced, most notably the sorting station, Juchem stated.

The union president also addressed the notable decline in mail services, as well as the dropping numbers in daily newspapers and paper advertising. He conveyed his fear that with the progressing of digitalisation, the job of mailman and mailwoman could soon belong to the past. The union therefore demands that they be allowed to actively help apply productive changes to the sector.

When asked about the implications of the pandemic, Juchem explained that staff members have done everything in their power to reduce the amount of personal interactions to the greatest degree possible.

Nevertheless, a number of problems were also solved in 2020. For one, the amount of double rounds was drastically reduced, for another, the dialogue with POST Luxembourg was improved.

Juchem expressed his dislike of the idea to close several post branches. He believes that politicians should have acted, especially since the mail service union contacted every party involved in the process.

On Thursday evening, the union will convene for a virtual congress.
