15 pedestrians lost their lives on the roads of Luxembourg over two years, but the sober findings by Statec don't stop there. According to figures revealed on Thursday morning by the institute, 123 serious injuries took place over the same period.

Almost three out of ten pedestrians knocked down by cars between 2016 and 2018 suffered serious injuries or worse.

In 59% of cases, the accident occurred when a pedestrian crossed the street and the vehicle was travelling in a straight line. 18% of accidents happened while the vehicle was turning. The other figures account for pedestrians not even being on the road at the time: 12% of accidents occurred when the pedestrian walked along the street and 8% when the pedestrian walked or stopped on the pavement or a cycle path.

Surprisingly, cases in which the pedestrian was standing or playing in the road were relatively rare, accounting for just 3% of accidents. The average age of the victims was 39 years old and victims were more likely to be elderly than children (53% versus 16%).

While these figures will probably reassure some parents, they are worrying nonetheless, adding to the eternal debate on road safety in Luxembourg.
