Even though unemployment is rising in Luxembourg, this does not mean there are no sectors facing labour shortages.

The unemployment rate currently stands at 6.3%, an increase of 8.1% compared with February last year. Despite this rise, there are still a number of professions where employers struggle to find candidates.

Each year, national employment agency ADEM publishes a list of occupations experiencing labour shortages. This year, it includes 20 different profiles. Among those sought are financial analysts, IT specialists, social workers, educators, nurses, and legal advisers in the defence sector.

Newly represented on the list this year are several industrial roles, particularly engineers and technicians involved in the installation and maintenance of industrial equipment. In construction, roofers are especially in demand.

Some professions, such as accountants and aircraft mechanics, are no longer on the list. However, ADEM clarifies that this does not mean there is no longer a need for workers in these fields.

For occupations classified as “high shortage professions”, specific rules apply to the recruitment of workers from third countries, allowing companies to benefit from simpler and faster hiring procedures.
