The government operates seven motorway service stations across the Grand Duchy. While the state constructs and maintains the infrastructure, the facilities are rented out to external business partners.
In 2020, the government brought in close to €65 million on the stations, and €71 million in 2019. On average, every station brought in about €10 million, which means that the government received a total of €347 million over the past five years. 83% of that revenue comes from petrol, 15.2% from shops, and 1.3% from hospitality.
In his response to the enquiry, Minister Bausch concluded that the stations have remained a profitable enterprise, with revenue far outweighing the investment. In 2020, for instance, total maintenance costs amounted to €550,000.
The response further conveyed that the motorway station near Pontpierre in the direction of Luxembourg City, built in 2005, cost €2.2 million, including the new layout for the road. In comparison, the station across the road in the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette cost close to €8 million, which is partially due to the larger roadworks required.
