Unanimous voteChamber passes new Covid laws, majority of restrictions expire on Friday evening

Almost two years after the pandemic-related state of emergency was declared, the Chamber of Deputies has unanimously voted to abolish almost all remaining Covid restrictions.

MP Mars Di Bartolomeo from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) underlined that the new laws represent the biggest step towards normal life that the country has taken in almost two years. With the Chamber unanimously voting in favour of the new proposition, almost all remaining Covid restrictions expired on Friday evening.

The people of Luxembourg have long awaited this day, said MP Josée Lorsché, fraction leader of the Greens. MP Gilles Baum from the Democratic Party (DP) also expressed joy over the fact that Luxembourg has overcome the crisis.

Despite all these words of delight, some speakers in the Chamber also stressed that the pandemic has not fully disappeared, that people are still dying, and that another infection wave is to be expected in autumn.

MP Claude Wiseler, president of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), cautioned the Chamber from thinking that the Covid crisis has ended. He thus requested that the government review the measures taken over the past two years to determine whether they were effective, just in case they become necessary once again. CSV members further expressed their belief that a vaccine mandate remains useful.

Minister of Health Paulette Lenert explained that it makes no sense to keep all vaccination centres open. It is now better to fall back on alternatives, like the mobile vaccination team. She also announced that a new campaign will be launched to reach people who still have not been inoculated.

Minister Lenert concluded by stating that it is only thanks to the country’s high vaccination rate and people’s solidarity that freedoms can return.
