Christelle Diederich from newspaper Tageblatt has been elected vice-president of the European branch of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), becoming the first Luxembourger to join the executive board. Diederich secured 30 out of 42 votes to win a seat on the European board during the AIPS Congress, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, from 9 to 13 April.
She was subsequently appointed vice-president for a four-year term following a proposal by newly elected president Marc Ventouillac. She is also the only woman currently serving on the board.
Luxembourg's sports journalists association, sportspress.lu, was represented at the congress by Diederich, its president, and secretary general Pierrot Feltgen. The event brought together global and continental representatives of the sports media, alongside meetings with major sporting bodies, including FIFA and UEFA.
Elections were a central focus of the congress at both European and global levels. At the world level, long-time president Gianni Merlo was re-elected by a wide margin, defeating a challenger from Hungary.
The congress also paid tribute to the late Petz Lahure, honorary president of sportspress.lu and a member of the AIPS ethics commission.
