Latest data confirmsElectric cars overtake diesel powered cars in Luxembourg

RTL Today
While the transition from internal combustion to electric engines is in full swing in Luxembourg, it seems that diesel is the first type of fuel to exit the race.

Is Luxembourg entering a new era of motorisation? Everything seems to be going well. According to the Automobile Federation, the number of electric cars registered since the beginning of 2021 has exceeded the number of diesel cars.

According to Febiac, electric vehicles, i.e. those 100% powered by electricity, as well as rechargeable and non-rechargeable hybrids, accounted for 32.4% of the personal vehicle market at the end of March. This is about one in three vehicles, and more than diesel, which accounts for 30.3% of registrations. Petrol engines remain in the lead with around 37.4% of registrations.

Guido Savi of Febiac explains that the ever-increasing range of new models combined with an extension of purchase incentives will only reinforce this trend. However, when taking a closer look, it becomes apparent that purely electric motorisation is actually slightly down (8.3% of private vehicles) but the total number is significantly increased when rechargeable hybrids (9.9%) and non-rechargeable hybrids (14.2%) are included.

Luxembourg, which has introduced significant state subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles, remains a major fuel seller. In 2019, more than 1.9 million cubic metres of diesel and more than 480,000 m3 of petrol were sold at service stations across the country.
