A court ruling in Belgium will decide whether the reorganisation plan is definitively rejected, with the decision expected at the end of March.

In any case, the future of the Dudelange site remains both uncertain and complicated, according to parliament’s economic commission on Thursday morning.

Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot said things had not improved, but they remained in close contact with the unions in working towards saving the site and keeping its employees in work. He described it as a “complicated matter, but with movement in the right direction”.

It has been clear for some time that Sanjeev Gupta, the current president of Liberty Steel, has no future, added Fayot. Many promises were made, but none kept. The LSAP minister said for this reason, they hoped the site would be purchased by a new owner.

Liberty Steel Dudelange employs around 220 workers after being acquired by ArcelorMittal in 2019.
