Consumer habitsHave food prices increased in the Grand Duchy?

Tons of fruit & vegetables are stored daily in the halls in Ellange before being distributed to supermarkets or restaurants.

Whether apples from Italy or salads from Germany, stores are full and there is no shortage of work, according to Statec figures in May.

Prices dropped by two percent from the previous month. Despite this decline, many people still feel that buying fresh produce has become much more expensive.

According to experts, this viewpoint is caused by the differences in consumer habits.

The ULC, the Luxembourg Consumers Union, also did not notice any significant price increases. A well-defined basket of products is tested every month in supermarkets to detect a possible fluctuation in the prices of different foods. The price of cauliflower, for example, increased by 200 percent between February and June.

Why do consumers have the impression that everything has become more expensive? This is believed to be due to the quantity of products purchased - in recent months, supermarkets have restocked more often than usual, as customers consume more than before.

The price of a fruit or vegetable is made up of several elements, causing prices to fluctuate more often.

Supermarkets also apply a margin on the price they paid to acquire the goods, with some stores slashing prices to retain and attract new customers.

This does not rule out price increases, as food is also affected by inflation, which drives prices up from year to year. But these changes due to inflation are generally attenuated by the index, at least in Luxembourg.
