Unlike earlier Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses, he was not born at Berg Castle or Betzdorf Castle, but at the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg City, named after his great-grandmother.
Guillaume was officially appointed Hereditary Grand Duke on 18 December 2000. He's the oldest child of Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.
On 20th October 2012, the Hereditary Grand Duke married Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy in the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg City. Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy thus became the Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.
The couple has lived in London since September 2018 to pursue post-university studies. Guillaume is enrolled at the Royal College of Defence Studies. According to the Grand Ducal Court, this additional schooling will prepare the future Grand Duke for his duties as head of state.
