Amid increasing heatwaves and devastating wildfires ravaging through Europe, Minister of Home Affairs Léon Gloden answered the parliamentary question by MPs Claire Delvourt and Mars Di Bartolomeo regarding 'Prevention and assessment of forest and vegetation fires in Luxembourg'.
A total of 513 wildfires have been recorded nationwide since the beginning of 2022, with the year 2022 proving to be the worst so far, accounting for 192 incidents, of which 176 were vegetation fires and 16 forest fires.
In 2026 authorities have documented 85 vegetation fires and eight forest fires, totaling 93 wildfires as of July 23, nearly reaching the yearly toll of 2023 and 2025, and amounting to nearly three times as much as 2024.
While the parliamentary answer didn't provide any details on how large the burnt surface is, Minister Gloden's response highlighted that the risk of such fires exists throughout the country, but is especially heightened in areas with increased agricultural activity.
The response also underlined that, in terms of ongoing efforts to tackle wildfire risks during the current drought period, the working group "Feux de végétation et de forêt" (Vegetation and Forest Fires), part of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, does not directly influence ongoing efforts, though the Minister added that the network created by the working group strengthened collaborative efforts during the 2026 season, including prevention and awareness measures.
