Quest recently conducted the survey which dealt with the eventual disappearance of coins and notes, a debate which still polarises opinion among the public.
According to the survey titled "Cash versus Cash", the disappearance of cash would not be a problem for 28% of residents, although 35% believed that it must remain an option.
Another issue tackled by the survey concerned supermarkets that would only accept bank cards. Here too, residents are divided, with 30% of respondents who approve, and 30% who said they were against this.
The most popular argument for maintaining cash was the anonymity of transactions. Nearly 9 of 10 respondents said they agreed or strongly agreed that cash guaranteed a person's right to make anonymous payments.
On the other hand, two-thirds of the residents who participated in this survey also agreed that paying by card simplified transactions for merchants and helped to improve security. Earlier this year, the Luxembourg Consumer Association warned that a cashless society would heavily impact people in more fragile circumstances.
